Tooth loss can detract from your quality of life in several ways. Not only might you feel self-conscious about the changes to your appearance, but you might also develop altered speech patterns, different dietary habits, and gastrointestinal issues.
Your dentist can rebuild your smile with dental implants, but many patients have questions about this treatment before proceeding. For example, many wonder how long their implants will last, though the answer depends significantly on what they’re made of. Continue reading to learn more about it!
What Are Dental Implants?
Unlike alternative solutions, like dentures and dental bridges, these restorations are surgically embedded into your jawbone. They include a support rod made from biocompatible materials that eventually fuses with your jawbone to give your new tooth added strength and stability.
This is also the only way to replace lost teeth that prevents the jawbone degeneration that typically occurs after teeth go missing. The pole that’s placed in your mouth functions like a root to stimulate new bone growth in your jaw to keep it active and healthy. This, in turn, maintains your facial structure and avoids additional tooth loss.
What Are Dental Implants Made From?
Dental implants have three main parts, and the materials used for each can impact the lifespan of your new tooth, as outlined in more detail below:
- The implant. The pole that’s placed in your jaw is typically made from titanium because it’s incredibly strong and lightweight, but it’s not the only option. Some patients opt for one made from zirconia, a white ceramic material that won’t cause metal allergies.
- The abutment. This connector will eventually hold the tooth-shaped portion of your prosthetic to the support pole, and is also often made of titanium. However, it can also be made from gold, zirconia, or polyether ether ketone (PEEK).
- The restoration. Implants can support a crown, bridge, or dentures, which can be made from various materials, like ceramic or acrylic, that reflect light like enamel and can be customized to match your natural teeth for seamless results.
How Long Do Dental Implants Last?
The lifespan of your dental implant depends on your unique circumstances, but typically, you can expect it to last anywhere from 15 to 20+ years. Once your jawbone successfully fuses with the support pole through osseointegration, it essentially becomes a permanent part of your mouth and can potentially last 30 years or longer, which might be the remainder of your natural life!
However, the ceramic crown that sits above the gumline sustains daily pressure from biting and chewing that can eventually wear it down. It might develop chips or cracks after 5 to 10 years, requiring repairs or replacement.
