3 Questions That May Be on Your Mind Following Dental Implant Surgery

When it comes to replacing missing teeth, dental implants have long been lauded as a superior solution compared to traditional options like dentures or bridges. This is because dental implants are the only form of tooth replacement that is capable of restoring the entire structure of a lost tooth, from root to crown – making them an enticing option for patients with all degrees of tooth loss. If you fall into this camp and you’re curious about getting implants, you may wonder what the recovery process will look like. Here are some relevant questions you shouldn’t hesitate to ask your dentist before your big day.

#1. How Much Pain Will I Be Dealing With?

The amount of discomfort you’ll feel after your surgery usually depends on how extensive the procedure was. The local anesthetic used during surgery will begin to wear off within 2 to 4 hours, and during this time, you may begin to feel less comfortable. Post-op pain and swelling are the most common symptoms, and you might also notice some bruising on your face. You’ll be able to take prescribed or over-the-counter pain medication to counteract this, but within 5 to 7 days, you should begin to notice substantial improvement. If your pain continues to linger or worsens, contact your dentist at once.

#2. When and What Can I Eat?

You’ll have to take some precautionary measures with your diet following your procedure. However, about an hour after your surgery, you’re normally allowed to remove the gauze that was placed inside your mouth, meaning you’ll be able to eat. Be sure to only eat soft foods or liquids during the first 24 hours after surgery, and absolutely avoid anything hot or spicy since this can cause irritation. You should also refrain from using a drinking straw, since the suction can interfere with your mouth’s healing. After a week or two, you can begin returning to your normal diet, continuing to be careful and following any other guidelines provided by your dentist.

#3. When Is the Post-Op Process Complete?

The dental implant recovery process takes longer compared to traditional tooth replacement options like dentures. The implant posts will need several months to fully fuse with your jawbone, and then you’ll have to receive your abutments and your custom-made dental restoration. Usually, you can expect 4 – 6 months of total healing before the new teeth can be placed. This can become longer if complications arise during the process; however, maintaining your dental hygiene and following your dentist’s instructions should keep things on track.

You shouldn’t hesitate to ask your dentist about anything that’s on your mind before your procedure; going into the process informed will help you feel confident about managing your recovery!
